Al Shams Centre for People with Disabilities is a health-care institution based in Sharjah. They offer education and therapy for students with special needs and are committed to provide the best quality care, education and therapy with a dedicated team of special educational teachers and therapists.

Here are all the highlights from my conversation with Ursula Rohrer from Al Shams Centre:

What was your background before you started the business? Basically, how did you get into the business?

I am an Occupational Therapist who initially started a homeschool and then opened Al Shams Centre.

Describe your business tweet style.

We are a provider of special education, vocational training Speech, Occupational and Behavioural Therapy for children, aged 4-21, with Autism and intellectual disabilities. We offer a parent support group and workshops.

What according to you, separates you from your competitors?

Our integrated and holistic teaching methods aim to equip the students to become a part of the workforce and provide them with a positive, productive future.

How do you foresee the next 10 years in your business?

Expanding on our existing services and providing work opportunities for adults of determination.

RAPID FIRE ROUND:

Which book are you currently reading? Bonus points for mentioning blogs and podcasts you are following.

Simon Sinek

How do you measure and celebrate success at work?

We celebrate the achievements of our students with their families and our staff according to the goals set out for each student, e.g. when a students starts to speak for the first time.

Your favourite interview question (while recruiting)? And why?

Please give me an example of how you teach an autistic child basic concepts.” It gives me a good indication of the teaching style, approach and methods.

Advice you'd like to give to a first-time business founder, someone just starting out? Or what would you have wished to have known before starting your business?

To share the administrative load as I have to balance administration, providing therapy sessions, supervising and training staff and parent support.
